Reducing pollutant emissions from cars

Since air quality in cities is getting worse and worse the Commission decided to propose additional emission limits to an already existing law in order to reduce these pollutant emissions from cars.

How did we get here?

Basically, the EU Commission realized that air quality - especially in cities - was getting worse and worse. The main reason for that being pollutant emissions especially from diesel cars. The evil emission the Commission is (among others) trying to reduce is called nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

Why is this important for me?

Well - because you are breathing the air in your city! And more than 5.5 million people worldwide are dying every year because of air pollution.

What's the content?

With the new proposal the Commission is basically "improving" the current laws by e.g. suggesting to introduce an emission limit for nitrogen dioxide (NO2): Modern diesel vehicles emit high and increasing amounts of NO2 which were not anticipated when the Commission introduced the old regulation. Some other small technical aspects might be adapted as well, however - this is so technical that we don't want to bother you with it. Read this if you are really into it.
MEPs also asked for the introduction of test procedures under real driving conditions after VW had faked its test results. Plus: they want to introduce mandatory fuel consumption meters for cars which let the driver always know how much the car is consuming in that moment.

What's happening with this legislation in the future?

Currently the European Parliament and the Council are negotiating in trialogue and an agreement had to be reached already in spring 2016. Even though this dossier is highly technical - and nobody really cared about it - it became quite famous during the past months with the VW scandal happening and air quality being a "hot topic".
