Solidarity is the backbone of the European idea. It is one of the core values we share. However, in recent times quite a lot of people (and Member States - yes I am also looking at you, Britain) seem to have forgotten that (take for example the fair distribution of migrants across the EU). Hence, it is getting even more important to actively practice solidarity, especially in your early years. This is why the European Commission created the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) which helps young people to volunteer in projects that benefit communities and people around Europe.
Because you might want to engage in solidarity activities and don't know where to start? Or you are an organisation looking for motivated young people to support you as well as some decent EU funding? The ESC will provide young people with easy to find possibilities to engage in volunteering, traineeships or jobs in solidarity-related sectors. You can even come up with your own project and make it known via the ESC.
Although the ESC already existed (since December 2016) Commissioners Oettinger (budget), Navracsics (education) and Thyssen (employment) decided to give it a solid legal base, its own financing mechanism and a broader set of solidarity activities.
These are the most important points you need to know:
The proposed system will allow for the effective management of authorised short-stays, increased automation at border-controls, and improved detection of document and identity fraud, according to the Commission.
The system will apply to all non-EU citizens who are admitted for a short stay in the Schengen area (maximum 90 days in any 180-day period).- See more at: http://www.novinite.com/articles/173907/EU+Proposes+Entry-Exit+System+to+Boost+Border+Control+Efficiency#sthash.ULiSguc8.dpuf
The file has been handed over to the Parliament's Committee for Culture and Education, which is currently dealing with the subject. Rapporteur Helga Trüpel (Greens, DE) already published her draft report. The vote is scheduled for November 2017, since the EU institutions committed to delivering on the proposal by the end of this year.
