Reducing administrative burden for EU citizens

This could be the beginning of an EU-wide online system to deal with annoying administrative procedures. Yippieh!

How did we get here?

We all live in one Single Market in Europe but when it comes to administrative procedures: It is all still very annoyingly national. The goal of this proposal by the EU Commission is to really make access to national administrative procedures and information easier - AND make these procedures also available cross-border. All through a single digital entry point.

Why is this important for me?

If you are planning to move to another EU country or trying to do business there: Your life should get easier. The EU calculated that the Digital Single Gateway could save EU citizens up to 855.000 hourse of their time - per year! And since public authorities will be forced to make some administrative procedures available online, this initiative will hopefully increase eGovernment offerings of these authorities overall. Sounds like good news for consumers!

What's the content?

The Commission's proposal will make your national administration offer 13 super-annoying administrative procedures available online: Ranging from requesting a birth certificate, to registering a car or starting a business. Special gimmick: The "once-only" principle says that data that has already been collected by one national authority only needs to be submitted by you once. You should be able to reuse it in other cross-border procedures when requested by you. Also: These procedures will need to be available in at least one other EU language.

What's happening with this legislation in the future?

The Consumer Affairs Committee is dealing with this proposal in the European Parliament. Nobody has been officially appointed yet to deal with this file - We will keep you posted!
